The history of cocktails: the Mai Tai
Despite the Polynesian name, Mai Tai is a star-spangled pillar of Tiki mixology. He was born in America in the 1940s as the result of an eternal rivalry between two famous American adventurers, Donn Beach and Victor Buergon. After a series of legal battles, he was recognized as a creature of the second, better known as “Trader Vic”, who created the Mai Tai in his famous restaurant in California. Buergon has in fact shown to have mixed the first Mai Tai in 1944 in honor of some friends visiting from Tahiti who, after having tasted it, exclaimed happily “Maita’i roa ae!” – in Polynesian: “Delicious! Out of the world!”. After renamed it, it became one of the most popular cocktails in the American West Coast (and not only).
